Module 11 · Verify current rules

Tax treatment depends on the account, activity and current rules.

Start by separating the investment from the account that holds it. Then verify eligibility, contribution limits, withdrawal treatment and reporting requirements using current primary sources.

Three questions

What kind of rule are you looking at?

  1. Account rule: Is the account registered, taxable, employer-sponsored or subject to a special program?
  2. Investment activity: Is the return interest, a dividend, a distribution, a gain or a loss?
  3. Personal situation: Does eligibility, timing, residency, contribution room or a life event change the answer?
Tax information ages quickly.

Contribution limits, forms, deadlines and tax treatment can change. A current CRA page or plan document is stronger evidence than an old article, calculator or social-media post.
