Asset allocation determines your risk. Asset location determines how much you keep after taxes. Eliminate Foreign Withholding Tax (FWT) and shield bond coupons across TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, and taxable accounts.

The 3 Inviolable Rules of Asset Location

Understanding how cross-border tax treaties and Canadian marginal tax brackets interact to generate pure annual tax alpha.

RULE 01

Article XXI Treaty Protection (RRSP)

Under Article XXI of the Canada-U.S. Tax Treaty, the IRS recognizes Canadian retirement plans (RRSPs and RRIFs) as pension trusts. Holding U.S.-domiciled ETFs (like VTI, ITOT, or VOO) directly inside your RRSP reduces IRS withholding tax from 15% to 0%. In a TFSA, that 15% is permanently forfeited with zero CRA tax credit.

RULE 02

Maximal Compounding Shelter (TFSA)

Because 100% of future TFSA growth and withdrawals are permanently exempt from Canadian tax, dedicate your TFSA to your highest expected-return assets (such as International Developed XEF/VIU and Canadian Equities XIC/VCN). Stashing low-yield cash or bonds in a TFSA wastes lifetime tax-free capacity.

RULE 03

Avoid Ordinary Income Traps (Taxable)

Bond coupons and GIC interest are taxed at 100% ordinary income rates (up to 53.5% in Ontario and Quebec). In non-registered accounts, prioritize Canadian equities for the Dividend Tax Credit and 50% capital gains inclusion rate, or deploy Corporate-Class Total Return Swaps (HXT, HXS, HBB) to eliminate annual T3/T5 slips completely.
