Module 10 · Compare the whole offer

Compensation is more than a salary number.

Pension contributions, health coverage, paid time, flexibility and learning support can change the value of an offer. Each benefit also has rules, costs and limits that need to be verified.

A practical comparison

Translate each benefit into a usable value.

  • Eligibility: When does coverage or matching begin?
  • Employer contribution: What is the formula, maximum and vesting rule?
  • Employee cost: What comes off each paycheque?
  • Coverage: What is included, excluded or capped?
  • Flexibility: Can you choose cash, time, coverage or a different plan?
  • Portability: What happens if you leave, change roles or take leave?
Ask for the written plan.

A benefits summary is a starting point. Confirm current eligibility, contribution, vesting, exclusions, claims rules and tax treatment with the employer or plan administrator.

Verify before acting

Benefits change with the plan and the person.

Consider your own priorities, cash flow, health needs, family situation and time horizon. Confirm current plan details with the employer, administrator or an appropriately qualified professional.
