U.S. Module 03 ยท Compare total value

Understand the workplace benefit before you count it as compensation.

Salary is only one part of a workplace financial decision. Contribution formulas, vesting, fees, eligibility, access and plan choices can change the practical value of a benefit.

A total-compensation lens

Compare the conditions, not only the headline.

  1. Contribution: What do you contribute, and what does the employer add?
  2. Vesting: When do employer contributions become yours?
  3. Access: What happens if you leave, change roles or need a distribution?
  4. Fees: Which plan, investment and advice costs reduce the value?
  5. Support: Who explains the plan, and where are the current documents?
Ask for the Summary Plan Description.

The plan document and required fee disclosures explain the terms that determine real value. IRS guidance notes that employer contributions may have a vesting schedule and that employees should review plan documents.

Managers can support learning without seeing private answers.

Organizations can provide time, explain where plan documents live and invite questions. They should not ask employees to disclose balances, investment choices, debt details or private action-plan notes.
