U.S. Module 04 ยท Verify the tax facts
Separate the account, the investment and the tax question.
Traditional and Roth accounts, taxable accounts, HSA rules and workplace plans can have different contribution, distribution and reporting considerations. Current rules and individual circumstances matter.
A useful sequence
Ask what changed, and when.
- Account: What type of account or plan is involved?
- Transaction: Is this a contribution, distribution, rollover, sale or transfer?
- Tax fact: Which current IRS rule or form applies?
- Timing: Does the tax year, age or eligibility condition matter?
- Support: Do you need a tax professional for your situation?
Do not rely on an old limit.
Contribution limits, income thresholds and distribution rules change. Use current IRS publications and plan documents, and keep tax advice separate from general investing education.
Build a verification list.
- Identify the account and transaction before comparing tax outcomes.
- Locate the current IRS or plan-document source.
- Record the question a qualified tax professional should answer.
